In the winter you can ski, snowboard or tube at the ski slopes. In Marshall, the county seat, walk down historic Main Street or go to the Depot for traditional music and dancing on Friday nights.
You’ll want to attend the annual Lunsford Music Festival, held the first weekend of October and named for Bascom Lamar Lunsford, the father of folk music who was born right here in Madison County.
Visit the town of Hot Springs, an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise, with the Appalachian Trail, whitewater rafting and canoeing on the French Broad River. Then relax in North Carolina’s only hot mineral baths.
In Mars Hill, stop in at the Rural Heritage Museum on the campus of Mars Hill University, or take in a play at the Southern Appalachian Repertory Theatre. Mars Hill University remains true to its tradition of service, learning, and leadership which has been a hallmark of the Mars Hill experience since 1856.
A variety of water activities abound in Madison. Half day or full day whitewater rafting trips are offered. You can rent a canoe and float easy just below Hot Springs, or cool off in one of the many swimming holes.
Madison County is home to numerous manufacturers, small businesses, and service people. The small family farm is the backbone of Madison County; it’s a way of life here. Tobacco barns dot the hillsides as do cattle — there is one cow for each person in this county!
Be sure to drop by the Visitors Center — our staff of dedicated local volunteers can provide you with all the information you need to make your visit enjoyable.

More than 200 local businesses and services are listed in our Business Directory!
Our business directory includes large manufacturers; small business enterprises; service people; individuals in business for themselves, many with 3 or fewer employees; and community minded folks who support Chamber efforts. They represent the diversity and strength of our business economy across the county.
The Madison County Chamber of Commerce has grown in leaps and bounds. We want you to be proud of the Chamber and be aware of all your neighbors and friends who join us as Chamber members. We encourage everyone to use the directory — you’ll not only be supporting local businesses, you’ll be joining us as friends and neighbors.
